Community based monitoring
Objectives:
- To gain a local perspective on changes around northern communities from Elders and other residents to complement the research by other participants in CiCAT.
- To participate with local communities in establishing studies of vegetation change that will involve Elders and students in ecosystem monitoring.
The North Slave Métis Association is conducting studies on perceptions of vegetation change in their traditional region north of Yellowknife, NWT. One of the major community projects involves monitoring berry production in four important shrub species. Students at local schools help establish research sites and learn to assess annual berry production. Studies sites are located in seven northern communities.
